Meet Grace: Enhancing Apprenticeship Journeys at The HEX Group
Crafting Careers with Care: The HEX Group’s Expertise in Apprenticeship Development
At The HEX Group, our apprenticeships are more than just a career pathway, they’re a chance to grow, learn, and thrive. Behind the success of our programme are Will, our apprentice manager, and Grace, our apprentice support lead. Together, they work tirelessly to guide and support our apprentices every step of the way.
1. What motivated you to take on a leadership role within the apprenticeship programme at The HEX Group?
Will: It all started nine years ago when The HEX Group was looking to grow its apprenticeship team. At the time, I was a group leader for electricians on the shop floor, and had apprentices working under me. Seeing how important the right training is for apprentices to progress was really emphasised to me, so when the opportunity came up, I knew it was something I wanted to take on.
Grace: For me, I’ve always been interested in learning and development, but I didn’t see myself as a traditional teacher. Joining the apprenticeship team let me combine my passion for helping people grow with my qualifications in safeguarding and first aid. Plus, I’m completing a teacher qualification soon, so it’s been a great fit!
2. What do you believe sets The HEX Group’s apprenticeship programme apart from others in the industry?
Will: Honestly, it’s the fact that we have a dedicated apprenticeship team. Not every company has that. This is what we do, day in and day out, and it means we get to know our apprentices personally and professionally. That connection is key to making our programme so effective.
Grace: The level of support we provide is something you don’t find everywhere. My whole role is about focusing on the apprentices—helping them learn, grow, and feel supported. I think that personal touch is what makes all the difference.
3. How do you support apprentices in their development and success within the company?
Will: We’re always there for them, whether it’s about their professional development or personal challenges. It’s about understanding what each apprentice needs and helping them achieve their goals, whatever those might be.
Grace: I’m there for the day-to-day activities, checking on their progress, teaching, marking their work, and giving them feedback. I also try to be someone they can rely on, like their ‘work big sister.’ If there’s ever an issue, I keep Will in the loop so we can sort it out together.
4. What qualities do you look for when selecting candidates for the apprenticeship program?
Will: It’s about finding the right fit for The HEX Group. We look for candidates who are adaptable, assertive, and organised, qualities that help them succeed in the workplace.
Grace: I’d add resilience, determination, and passion. Apprenticeships can be challenging, so having that drive to push through is so important.
5. What’s been the most rewarding part of leading the apprenticeship program?
Will: For me, it’s walking through the business and seeing the impact apprentices have had over the years. Some of the apprentices I worked with are now in team lead and management roles, which is amazing to see. Plus, hearing positive feedback from colleagues about how great our apprentices are, it doesn’t get better than that.
Grace: I love seeing the apprentices grow. Watching them overcome challenges and mature into confident, capable professionals is so rewarding. And when they get a job at the end of it and thrive, that’s the cherry on top.
The HEX Group’s apprenticeship programme thrives thanks to Will and Grace’s dedication and expertise. Their support ensures every apprentice has the tools and guidance needed to succeed, shaping the future of our workforce.
